冬至 (Dongzhi, The Winter Solstice) and Chinese Children Song "賣湯圓" ( Mai Tangyuan, Selling Rice Balls )

December 22, 2009

Today is 冬至 Dōngzhì (The Winter Solstice Festival), one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians, a time for the family to get together. Many families are making and eating 湯圓 (汤圆 tāngyuán rice balls) which symbolize reunion.

I didn't get a chance to eat 湯圓 today, I'll have to go to the Asian market to shop some.
Here are some 湯圓 photos which make me 流口水 ( liú kǒushuǐ drooling):
1. 汤圆
2. 茼蒿 豬肉 鹹 湯圓
(茼蒿 猪肉 咸 汤圆 Tónghāo Zhūròu Xián Tāngyuán Crowndaisy Pork Salty Rice Balls)

Here's a Children song "賣湯圓" ( 卖 汤圆 Mài Tāngyuán Selling Rice Balls ) I'd like to share with you. Thanks to Bananaz reminded me the song.

The 小二哥 ( xiǎoèr gē, long time ago in China, people called the server in restaurants
小二 or 小二哥. 小二哥 is more polite.) in the video is cute. The way he throws the rice balls in the pot is pretty cool though it's probably edited.
There's a white flag with "酒" ( jiǔ wine ) on it in the video. It means a place that serve food.
In the beginning of the video, it says
卖汤丸 Mài Tāngwán. 丸 wán is also balls or pills.

Chinese Love Song "回家" ( Hui Jia, Return Home) by Shunza

November 26, 2009

Song title: 回家 ( Huí Jiā, Return Home)

To me, it's a sad song about a lady's love left her without saying any reason and how she misses him, loves him, wants to let go but also wants him to come home.
I'm glad that my personality won't get me in this kind of situation...lol.
Just love the singer's voice and how she sings the song.

Singer: 順子 ( Shùn zi, Shunza ) was born in 1973 in Beijing, China.
A famous singer and songwriter. Her concerts are more intimate and cocktail-style which I like.
She released her first album in 1997 in Taiwan.
This song is the first song in her first album.
The Chinese lyrics in the video is traditional .

From Foongpc's request, I try to translate the Chinese words into English following the order of the Chinese words. So some will be strange, follow by the sentences which I think are proper. There may be mistakes. Please feel free to correct me, I'll be appreciated!

Chinese Idiom "老馬識途" (Laomashitu, An Old Horse Knows the Way)

November 23, 2009

This Chinese idiom is requested by Bananaz.

Traditional Chinese: 老馬識途,
Lǎomǎshìtú or 識途老馬 Shìtúlǎomǎ.
Simplified Chinese: 老马识途, Lǎomǎshítú or 识途老马, Shítúlǎomǎ.

Translation: An old horse knows the way. Today, a person who is very experienced at any given thing may be referred as "the old horse who knows the way".

I've found some videos about the idiom story. I'm using this one from YouTube as it has Chinese subtitle and for practicing purpose. You may find the story is a bit different from what you may already knew. Both versions are used today.

Chinese Pop Song "聽媽媽的話" (Ting Mama De Hua, Listen To Mom's Words) by Jay Chou

November 06, 2009

** Tips: The reds are linked to related pages. Click on them to visit. They should open in new windows. The greens are pinyin. **

Song title: Tīng Māma De Huà (Listen To Mom's Words) (聽媽媽的話, 听妈妈的话)

Singer:
Zhōu Jiélún (Jay Chou) (周倫, 周杰伦) who is one of the most popular hot Taiwanese musicians, singers, producers and actors right now, very talented and has won the World Music Award four times.
To be honest, I didn't like his style until Aries requested this song. Please tell me why you like Jay?
There are slow parts in the song which is perfect for beginners, the melody is good as well. But the fast parts in the song are way too fast and I could hardly catch up. It's very challenging and fun.

The lyrics touch moms' hearts. I can see a lot of moms are telling their kids: "See even Jay Chou is saying listen to mom..."

CLICK HERE for more information about the Jay Chou.
The subtitle in the video is in traditional Chinese.

Whew! What a song! Is your tongue twisted?

* Word by word audio, explanation and traditional characters:
Copy any sentence in Chinese above and paste in the dictionary in my side bar then hit "Search". The traditional characters are at the right side of the new opened page where it says "Traditional variant". If you see a blank that means the character's traditional version is the same as simplified version.

Jay Chou acted as a son in the movie "Curse of the Golden Flower". I have to share this since it's an awesome one with the super stars Chow Yun-Fat (Zhōu Rùnfā), Gong Li and the song happened to mentioned Zhōu Rùnfā as well. It was at the time of its release the most expensive Chinese film to date. Here's the trailer:

Kiss 100 Men In Paris

I found a very interesting Chinese blog

豆楊, 在巴黎吻百個男人 (豆杨,在巴黎吻百个男人)
"Dòuyáng ,Zài Bālí Wěn Bǎi Gè Nánrén" (Douyoung, Kiss 100 Men In Paris)

Douyoung, I think it's her pen name, a young pretty lady from Taiwan who's studying music in Paris.
I consider her a great pianist and admire her. Her YouTube Video is amazing:

She wanted to know how it would feel about kissing 100 men in Paris so she came up with this "crazy" idea. She teamed up with a photographer and started to look for men to kiss on the streets and have the photos taken. I think she has kissed over 50 men so far. She's going to publish a book about this story so not every kiss will be posted. I think those photos she has posted are beautiful.

第一个吻 dì yī gè wěn ( The 1st kiss)
第五个吻 dì wǔ gè wěn ( The 5th kiss)
第七个吻 dì qī gè wěn ( The 7th kiss)
第八个吻 dì bā gè wěn ( The 8th kiss)
第九个吻 dì jiǔ gè wěn ( The 9th kiss)
第十三个吻 dì shí sān gè wěn ( The 13th kiss)
第十五个吻 dì shí wǔ gè wěn ( The 15th kiss)
第十六个吻 dì shí liù gè wěn ( The 16th kiss)
第三十七个吻 dì sān shí qī gè wěn ( The 37th kiss)
第四十六个吻 dì sì shí liù gè wěn ( The 46th kiss) *This is my favorite.
This one she didn't say the number of the kiss.
